Explanation (?):

The internet authentication service is a feature of Windows server versions that provides a centralized avenue for external users to authenticate against. This service also allows for auditing of connections. This service is able to authorize for virtual private networking (VPN), remote access servers (RAS), 802.1x wireless, the wired equivilency protocol (WEP), switch access points and allows for remote authentication dial-in-user services (RADIUS) protocols that allows for cross compatability. If this service is disabled other backup IAS servers will perform the task, if they exist. If you wish to use IAS for remote access authentication then you will want to leave this service set to automatic. If you do not wish to use this feature then it is recommended you uninstall it through the add/remove components dialog rather than just disabling it.
